Nice violin work for 3 lessons, Erin! ! One of the most gratifying moments I ever experienced was my brother-in-law giving my second grade daughter a violin. She immediately wanted to take violin in school. She was already taking flute in school and piano at home. She made a deal with the math teacher to keep up although she'd be skipping class twice a week. She came home after her first lesson and played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and it wasn't horrible! I was flabbergasted. And also grateful, because I had already sat through recitals that were great jobs from the kids, but painful to hear if you weren't the kid's parent. She eventually got bored with violin and put it away. That was fine. It gave her more time for the other two and more time for socialization as well. I winder if things would have been different if she was living through Covid. I'm betting we get some great musicians out of this, and great literature as well! Not to mention great pets! An upside!

Ron was right, it was a whole essay and a great one at that. Now I'm nagging myself to pick up my violin and finish what I wanted to accomplish, be somewhat competent. How does Carl react when you play? Neil Young had a dog named Carl so awesome choice. be well, this too shall pass.

I used to play the fiddle--never great, but I could play jigs and reels up to speed without being too horrible. But I remember hearing my wife (we'd just started dating as I was learning to pay) tell someone that when she realized she could put up with the sounds I was making she knew she was in love. :)

All these years later I still find that there's just something really satisfying about learning a new instrument.

And you--only three lessons? That's actually impressive.

Which reminds me for no good reason: have you heard the Portsmouth Sinfonia? It was a collective of musicians who played popular classical music--the caveat was that you couldn't play an instrument that you had more than a few hours experience with. When I used to work in a record store we played their first album to clear the store at closing time...
